With her sphinx-like features and slight frame, Kate Moss has been hailed by Vogue as “relentlessly captivating,”[1]“maddeningly, elusively glamorous,”[2] and “iconic.”[3]Whether swimming in silk or sexing it up at the disco, one thing is true: She commands the page.

Moss was only fourteen and traveling through JFK airport after a family vacation in the Bahamas when she was spotted by a modeling agency owner. Before long, she was being photographed at a British seaside resort by Corinne Day for the cover of The Face. At that time, Amazonian supermodels reigned supreme in fashion and, measuring five feet seven inches tall, Moss stood out from the crowd at castings. (Industry legend has it that her agents expected her to grow taller, but she never did.)

    Katherine Ann Moss born in Croydon in South London. Her father works for a travel agency; her mother is a barmaid.
  2. 1988
    Kate is discovered in JFK airport by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Models Agency.
  3. 1989
    Moves in with photographer Corinne Day, who takes the teen under her wing.
  4. 1990
    Walks in John Galliano’s first Paris show. July: Photographed by Day for the cover of The Face. “The images of Kate Moss by Corinne Day and Juergen Teller really changed fashion,” designer Marc Jacobs later tells WWD. “That was a moment when we looked at beauty and glamour in a different way.”[7]

    Lands big Calvin Klein contract. About the casting, publicist Nian Fish of KCD later tells Vogue: “The big girls were there—Cindy [Crawford], Nadja [Auermann]. And then Kate Moss walked in. She put on this beige chiffon slip dress, and it just fell on her body. We put her in flat shoes, and when she walked, the fabric was like liquid flowing around her body. I got goose bumps.     Appears in her first Pirelli calendar, shot by Herb Ritts. Begins dating actor Johnny Depp. July: Shot by Irving Penn for Voguefor the first time (she will pose for the legendary lensman again in 1995 and in 1996).

    July: Appears on the cover of Vogue wearing a pink silk, A-line Calvin Klein dress. Releases Kate: The Kate Moss Book.September: Appears on cover of W with brother Nick.

    Wins VH1 Model of the Year award.
  10. 1997
    Makes a cameo in the Elton John video for “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.” Accompanies Johnny Depp to Cannes, where she wears a simple gray bateau-neck sheath byNarciso RodriguezVogue deems the look “unforgettable.”[9]

    Poses for Prada and YSL Rive Gauche ad campaigns. Jumpstarts sequin trend by wearing a sparkling blue vintage dress to the CFDA Awards.

    January: Donatella Versace throws her a twenty-fifth birthday party in Paris. June: Moss cohosts the American Fashion Awards with designers Sandy Dalal and Narciso Rodriguez.October: Photographed in leopard-print Emanuel Ungaro couture with rap hit-maker Sean Combs for a Vogue portfolio.

    Appears in Burberry’s spring ad campaign alongside Lord Frederick Windsor. (She will go on to do a long string of campaigns for the brand.)
  14. 2001
    Becomes the face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle. August:Debuts brunette pixie haircut in a Vogue article. Marc Jacobs tells the magazine, “You can never make Kate look as good on the runway as she does in real life.”[10] September: She signs an exclusive global contract to be the face of Rimmel cosmetics.

    John Galliano, who cites Moss as an inspiration behind his Dior Haute Couture collection, tells Vogue that he considers her “the Marilyn Monroe of today.”[11] February: At a Mario Testino photo exhibit at London’s National Portrait Gallery, an entire room is reserved for his photographs of Moss. September:Daughter Lila Grace is born to Moss and Dazed and Confusedpublisher Jefferson Hack. “I’ve got the dream,” the supermodel later says. “I’ve got the family, and I’m still working. That was my dream always.”[12]

    Dances in a White Stripes music video. Makes her singing debut in Primal Scream’s recording of “Some Velvet Morning.”September: Artist Chuck Close photographs Moss nude for a 40-page portfolio in W.
  17. 2004
    She wears a blue vintage thrift-shop dress and white mink jacket to meet the Queen of England. January: Celebrates her thirtieth birthday in midnight-blue sequins at her Beautiful and Damned–themed party.
  18. 2005
    Sports short shorts and Wellington boots at the Glastonbury music festival, sparking a wellie trend. February: Lucien Freud’s portrait of Moss fetches $7.29 million at auction. June:Moss wears Dior couture to the CFDA Awards, where she takes the prize for Fashion Influence. September: Dropped by H&M, Chanel, and Burberry after the Daily Mail releases photos purporting to show her using drugs. October: Designer Alexander McQueen, a longtime friend, shows support by wearing a “We Love Kate” T-shirt at his show. December: She guest-edits French Vogue.

    Stars in Agent Provo­ca­teur’s Miss X movie miniseries. March:McQueen closes his fall collection with a hologram of Moss.September: She tops Vanity Fair’s International Best-Dressed List.

    Sparks a demand for fur after being seen in a (probably faux) monkey coat around London. May: Debuts wildly popular line for Topshop. Included on Time’s list of “100 most influential people.” July: Breaks up with Pete Doherty, her drug-addicted rocker fiancé, and begins dating Jamie Hince of the band the Kills. August: Announces the release of Kate, the first of seven fragrances by Moss (to be followed by Velvet Hour in 2008, Vintage in 2009, Vintage Muse and Wild Meadow in 2010, plus two variations on her original scent in 2008 and 2009).September: Wears a vintage Dior silk dress to the opening of the “Golden Age of Couture” exhibit at the Victoria and Albert; after the dress is stepped on, and rips up the back, she ties it up into a mini.

    May: Wears pale-gray Stella McCartney to the Met’s “Superheroes” gala, alongside the designer. October: Artist Marc Quinn’s 18-carat-gold statue of Moss is unveiled at the British Museum.
  22. 2009
    Moss becomes the face of YSL Parisienne fragrance. May: With Marc Jacobs, co-chairs the gala for the Met’s “Model as Muse” show, wearing a gold lamé turban and dress he made just for the occasion. Ranks number three on Forbes’s list of “World’s Top-Earning Models,” after reportedly banking $8.5 million over a twelve-month period.

    Appears on the cover of musician Bryan Ferry’s album Olympia.Featured, in leather, in Balmain’s fall campaign. February:Launches Kate Moss for Longchamp line. September: Appears for the thirtieth time on the cover of British Vogue. Taschen releases Kate Moss by Mario Testino. “Mario took me to a new level of glamour,” she recalls in the coffee-table tome. “I don’t think anybody had seen me as any kind of sexy model before he did. He was the one that transformed me.”[13]
